President Donald Trump and his cronies are preparing for the worst after a new report that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is now probing “whether the president attempted to obstruct justice.”
But Trump has no intentions of backing down. As Charles Blow writes on Monday, he’s “girding for a fight.”
On Friday morning, Trump began his day by tweeting: “I am being investigated for firing the FBI Director by the man who told me to fire the FBI Director! Witch hunt.”
According to Blow, this statement indicates Trump is likely under FBI investigation, even if Trump’s lawyer Jay Sekulow emphasized on Sunday that this was not the case: “The fact of the matter is the president has not been and is not under investigation.”
USA Today reports that Trump has found himself ensnared in over 3,500 legal battles, a number unmatched by any other former president or presidential nominee.
Newt Gingrich, a staunch Trump supporter, appeared on ABC News on Sunday to excoriate Mueller for hiring a group of partisan laywers that he claims are bent on removing the president from office. On the Friday of the investigation, Gingrich told Fox New’s Sean Hannity: “They’re going to get somebody. I don’t think they’re going to get the president, but they’re going to get somebody, and they’re going to get him for something. And they’re probably going to jail.”
Charles Blow believes this is one area where Gingrich is right. He writes: “I agree: When federal investigators start looking for something, they often find something. I’m not removing the president so quickly from jeopardy…The president and his White House are going to fight this tooth and nail, but in the end ‘someone is probably going to jail.”
